Innovation Manager

Salary:         Salary in the region of £30,000 - £34,000 per annum depending upon qualifications and relevant experience. Contributory pension scheme, 5 weeks annual leave entitlement plus Medipex closure days and statutory public holidays.

Tenure:        This post is permanent but subject to a probationary period.

Hours:          Full time (Negotiable)

Relocation   Medipex will pay for one week in a local hotel and up to £500 in

Expenses:    respect of removal expenses on presentation of the relevant invoices.

Travel:         This post will involve some travel within the UK therefore a driving licence is essential and own car would be preferable.  Travel expenses are paid monthly with the salary into the individual’s bank account. 

Background to the Post

Medipex provides a range of commercialisation services, principally to the NHS, associated with the exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP) in MedTech and Healthcare.  There is also a growing aspect of the business that provides similar expertise to healthcare companies looking to introduce innovative technologies in to the health service. The main offices are located at Thorpe Park, Leeds just off the M1 at Junction 46. 

It has a core of highly experienced staff and it now has a vacancy for an Innovation Manager to join the team.

The post holder will be supported to provide technology transfer services to Medipex NHS member organisations, University researchers and MedTech companies.  


The key principles and objectives behind the development and commercialisation of innovation and related IP at Medipex are as follows:

  • To promote Medipex and its services to relevant organisations including all levels of NHS staff and to ensure we are effectively capturing inventions and innovative projects as they develop.
  • Provide a mechanism for exploiting IP arising from within the NHS member organisations and their collaborators.
  • Where appropriate, work with organisations and inventors from the ideas stage through to commercialisation.
  • Where IP is developed jointly with a University or company, ensure an equitable financial return to the inventor and the NHS Trust from the commercialisation process.
  • Work with external partners where necessary to determine the most appropriate route for exploitation and progress the development of innovative products to reach the market.

Duties of the Post

The Appointee will spend the first six months working directly with Medipex staff whilst developing their own portfolio of new IP projects.  Throughout the tenure of the post there will be proactive support from the other team members.

During the tenure of the post, it is expected the Innovation Manager will play an increasingly active role in the company’s activities including:

  • Identification and assessment of new ideas and research emanating from NHS members as having relevant clinical or commercial potential.
  • Market research, market entry feasibility studies and business plans, in support of commercial exploitation.
  • Undertaking targeted technology audits and assessments
  • Project management of commercial exploitation.
  • Developing a network of contacts within NHS departments and clinical teams, key university Technology Transfer departments, and commercial and professional organisations with an interest in innovation.
  • Provision of IP advice and developing protection strategies including patenting, copyright, trademark and design registration.
  • Management of licence /option/ assignment deal negotiation and appropriate agreement drafting for commercialising
  • Developing commercial activities on behalf of Medipex.
  • Maintaining a knowledge of companies interested in commercial arrangements with Medipex and the NHS.
  • Representing Medipex to its NHS members, NHS bodies, partners and commercial organisations and the production of regular reports.
  • Helping to engender a culture of IP awareness within all areas of the NHS community served, that ensures that intellectual assets are recognised by the creators of such IP.
  • Delivering innovation related training to Medipex customers.
  • To advise and support NHS staff and others with their R&D funding applications.

Person Specification

The successful candidate should be educated to honours degree or equivalent in the biosciences, health sciences or a related subject and will be expected to demonstrate:

  • A basic knowledge of intellectual property issues, and commercialisation processes.
  • A good knowledge of the use of IT for recording of data and the provision of reliable and accurate management information.
  • The ability to work as part of a team and also on own initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships both internally and externally.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • A proven track record in delivering results and achieving targets in their career to date.
  • The ability to prioritise and balance workloads.
  • Enthusiasm and self-motivation.
  • The ability to adopt a sales and customer service approach to work, demonstrating how you can add value.
  • A higher degree in the biosciences, health sciences or a related subject would be desirable.
