Mobile app can help doctors treat brain injury patients

A digital cookery app which asks people recovering from neurological injuries to cook a chilli con carne could help speed up patient assessment time, researchers have said. Dr Lynne Barker, Reader in Cognitive Neuroscience at Sheffield Hallam University, created the Cooking Task app after research found that cooking can provide a sensitive and reliable measure of executive function ability after a brain injury. She received an award at the Medipex Awards, where Judges agree to provide a platform to showcase pioneering new ideas and technologies developed by, or with, NHS staff to improve patient care and make services more efficient. Medipex hosts its first intern

The Medipex team were delighted to host a 3-month internship this summer. Sheffield University PhD student, Richard Louden, has been shadowing members of the team to understand how Medipex functions as a company and during his short stay he has made a valuable contribution to many of the projects we are working on across different Trusts and has got involved in other activities that have been ongoing during this period, such as with the Innovation Scout Network and the Medipex Innovation Awards. This year, Medipex and YHAHSN have agreed to jointly manage the expansion of the ISN to 100 scouts sourced from across NHS organisations in the region. The objectives for the ISN are also to be expanded to ensure that the Innovation Scouts and host organisations are more familiar with the project activity being undertaken across all YHAHSN work programmes and are able to understand how their contribution to the ISN is related to and integrated within this wider portfolio of activity. Improved obstetric forceps getting ready for the clinic

Since 2010, Medipex has been working with a consultant obstetrician at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Dr Alexander Oboh, to re-develop the obstetric forceps to provide a device that is single use, has built in safety features to prevent too much traction force being applied to the head of the baby and is made of lightweight, recyclable, non-steel materials. With the assistance of Medipex, the device has now been developed ready for CE Mark application. A small clinical study will then be conducted before it is taken to market. Four working mums from York have decided to take the challenge to break a world record by becoming the oldest rowers to cross the Atlantic, they are known as the Yorkshire Rows.
