TSB Voucher awarded for diabetes electronic system project

The funding has been awarded to an innovative idea destined to improve the management of diabetic patients, an Application Program Interface developed by a local company, Active Medicine Ltd.

The web-based interface is linked with SystmOne (an Electronic Medical Record used in primary care) to extract data of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) which is then displayed alongside NICE guidelines for management of T2DM. The intention is to improve physician adherence to these guidelines and thereby improve diabetes care. The system will be further fully developed into an Application Program Interface (API) which will be XML based, to be integrated into the web-based interface. This improved system will enable a more sophisticated and targeted extraction of data, and open the way to supported clinical decisions based on NICE guidelines. Once established, the API could also be used in the management of other long-term conditions. An application is currently in the process in order to obtain NICE approval.

The company behind this innovation, Active Medicine Ltd, is based in Leeds (UK) and was formed by two experienced General Practitioners with an interest in Chronic Disease Management.  In 2005 their Practice won the Improvement Foundation's Guy Rotherham Award by developing nurse-led 'QUALITY' clinics for the care of patients with chronic diseases. The company has already developed a software tool, the Asthma WebApp, destined to address the recognised needs of both patients and healthcare professionals and promotes best practice in asthma care.   And were a previous finalist in Medipex Annual Innovation Awards.

The TSB Voucher application was initiated by Active Medicine Ltd medical director – Dr Howard Last, and finalised with the assistance of Dr Burrinder Grewal, Medipex Ltd Business Development Manager – who has experience of submitting such application for funding.
