Professor Michael Smith
New Chair at Medipex
Professor Michael Smith BSc, MSc, PhD, DSc, CPhys, CSci, FIKT, FBIR, FIPM, FInstP has taken over from Professor Gareth Lloyd-Jones as Chair of the Board of Medipex.
Mike recently retired from his role as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer and Professor of Medical Science at Sheffield Hallam University. He was previously Professor of Medical Physics and Dean of Research at the University of Leeds and also Director of NHS Research in Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.
He has 35 years’ experience in research, producing more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and patents in the general area of non-invasive investigative techniques in medicine, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, image analysis and terahertz imaging and analysis. Over the past 15 years, his experience of research and innovation has extended beyond medicine and health and encompassed nanoscience, informatics, design and business.
Mike also has over 25 years’ experience in knowledge transfer of medical and health technologies, particularly the exploitation and commercialisation of research. He has worked with both large corporations and SMEs and has also formed a number of medical device related companies. He has served on numerous National Committees including: RAE Panel Member; NHS Central R&D Committee;, MRC Medical Advisory Board;, NHS New and Emerging Applications of Technology (NEAT) and i4i Advisory Board;, NHS R&D Standing Group on Health Technology Assessment; and DTI Foresight Taskforce on Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices. Mike was President of the British Institute of Radiology in its centenary year and is currently Chair of the Institute of Knowledge transfer.

Over the next five years I am convinced that Medipex will play an important role in the changing NHS environment; it will continue to grow its support to industry and universities in the healthcare sector and will extend its activities to other parts of the UK.”
