Description: An intensive four day professional development course exploring the impact of health technology assessment on uptake of innovative technologies.

The increasing emphasis on evidence-based, cost-effective purchasing of medical technologies has created the need to provide on-going training in health technology assessment to the industry and local decision makers. The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) CPD course has been designed specifically to meet these needs. The course examines the practical application of HTA to product development and the use of HTA in different countries. 

Day 1 – Overview of Health technology Assessment
Trends in healthcare with an overview of health systems; history of HTA and implementation of HTA in major markets; disciplinary foundations of HTA.

Day 2 – The HTA process
The process of HTA; the components of HTA, i.e. valuing health outcomes, costing; alternative methods and type of economic evaluations; adoption of health technology and reimbursement

Day 3 – Case studies
The use of HTA along the product development pathway, supplemented by three case studies and discussion on the HTA process in the UK

Day 4 – HTA in other developed countries
Regulatory affairs and reimbursement systems in Canada, Australia, Europe and US; analysis of health technology assessments of medical devices.

13 Oct 2008 - CPD4 Health Innovation - Principles of Marketing in Health Technology CPD course - Part 1

Date: 13th October - 14th October 2008 (2 full days)

Venue: University of Bradford

Description: This course is being run in two sessions, 13-14 October and 13-14 November 2008.

The health provision marketplace is massive in size and significant in complexity.  There are a host of internal and external competing brands, a change in the commissioning environment, and all sorts of conflicting messages.  The customer base is equally diverse, with widely contrasting awareness of, and demand for, new and existing healthcare services. Commissioners and suppliers need to understand and influence the b2b and b2c (business to business and business to customer) market.  This challenging programme is an important introduction to the application of the principles of marketing in the healthcare sector. 

Day 1 - The real nature of marketing
Marketing - myth and reality.  Understanding the concept of marketing orientation.  Outline introduction to the 8 stage marketing Mix.

Day 2 - Understanding the customer
Market segmentation - from both a supplier and customer perspective.  Buying and selling processes.  The Buying Centre and avoiding the gatekeeper.

27 Oct 2008 - CPD4 Health Innovation - Technology & Innovation Management CPD course - Part 1

Date: 27th October - 28th October 2008 (2 full days)

Venue: University of Bradford

Description: This course is delivered in two intensive two-day blocks, 27-28 October and 8-9 December 2008.

The course integrates lectures with three tasks which provide participants the opportunity to experience technology innovation in entrepreneurial settings (company visit), develop new business models (technology-based) and present solutions for current organisational challenges (organisation visit).
 

Day 1 – Understanding TIME What is innovation and what is its relationship to entrepreneurship? Understanding the entrepreneurial process is at the heart of managing technology innovation. The first task involves experiencing innovation in commercial entrepreneurial settings.

Day 2 – Strategic TIME
Why is innovation of strategic importance to organisations? The relationship between strategy and innovation needs careful thought and management. The second task involves appreciating new emerging technologies and developing new business models.

How can technology innovation be managed to improve health care provision? Understanding how to manage the innovation process is a critical skill for managers to develop. The final task involves investigating a current organisational challenge in the health care sector.

Day 4 – TIME in Action
Integrating the appreciation of the entrepreneurial process with the understanding of the innovation process to develop solutions for organisational challenges. The course culminates with group presentations of solutions to an expert panel and witnessing technology innovation management and entrepreneurship in action.
